Delicate & Graceful

Antique bracelet with natural pearls & diamonds, Great Britain circa 1905

The British Empire was at the zenith of its power in the early years of the 20th century. Almost a quarter of the world's population lived in the global colonial empire. As a result, a never-ending stream of exotic goods and valuables poured out of the colonies into the great ports of the English mother country. Precious stones and pearls were imported in unprecedented quantities, and the jewellery production of those years was more abundant than ever before or since. It is from this period, more specifically the reign of King Edward VII, that the present bracelet dates. It presents three graceful decorative links made of delicate gold wires. In the centre of each shines a beautiful oriental pearl in a melting lustre, framed on both sides by small laurel branches. The small leaves are adorned with sparkling diamond roses in light platinum settings. In its formal language, the bracelet combines continental Art Nouveau influences with motifs from the so-called Garland Style. Wonderfully preserved, this piece of jewellery, which we discovered for you in London, is now waiting for a new wearer on whose wrist it can once again exude the grace of the Belle Époque.

England, in the years around 1900: The Empire is at the height of its power. The old Queen Victoria has brought peace and economic success to her subjects. Luxury and wealth reach ever broader strata in London. The new style of Art Nouveau, or Style Liberty, as it is known in England, which originated in France, is eagerly adopted, as it reflects everything that is currently in fashion: lightness, elegance and a touch of cosmopolitanism.
