The lightness of being
Antique Lavallière Necklace with Diamonds in Gold & Platinum, circa 1910
Negligé necklace, Lavallière - both terms stand for the same necklace. The origin of the second name is a matter of disagreement in the history of jewellery: either it comes from the actress Ève Lavallière, who loved to wear such necklaces, or it derives from the Duchess Louise de La Vallière, who liked to tie men's ties into loops with ends of unequal length. The term negligee necklace, on the other hand, alludes to the casual elegance of such an asymmetrical piece of jewellery, as it derives from the French word for "careless". This necklace is casually elegant, but not at all carelessly designed. The two "loop ends" of slightly unequal length are set with diamonds of approximately 0.40 ct each, which are set into oscillation by the moveable pendulums, thus catching and reflecting the light. Two rose-cut diamonds set the connecting points of the bars and three other diamonds. The diamonds shine particularly brightly thanks to the overlay of platinum on the solid gold pendant, which is typical of the period. A chain also crafted in platinum on gold with a box clasp completes the design. Creations of this kind, delicate and mobile rather than heavy and rigid, enjoyed particular popularity in the early 20th century. With their ethereal lightness, they captured the attitude to life of the late Belle Époque - those last, carefree years before the First World War that were focused on beauty.
