Shades of Gold

Antique Victorian bracelet with citrines in gold, around 1840

The citrine, agate, jasper, amethyst and onyx - for the chemist, all these gemstones are quite uniform quartz. However, they are clearly distinguished by their color. The color spectrum of the citrine begins with the most delicate champagne tones, shows itself now and then also honey-colored and reaches up to a deep, amber tone like sweet Madeira wine. Whenever jewelry fashion favored warm colors and a variety of colorful gemstones, citrines were particularly sought after. This was also the case around the middle of the 19th century. The present bracelet is particularly ornamentally rich and features a variety of different elements. Sculptural shells alternate here with flatly designed quatrefoils, and small gold beads enrich the picture in between. In this wealth of ornamentation, the five citrines appear to be merely further aspects of the gleaming gold surface. Their faceting elicits all manner of honey-colored yellow hues. Despite its massive appearance, the bracelet is pleasantly lightly crafted, as is typical of the period in which it was made: it was the early years of the Victorian era, when people loved warmly toned gold jewellery and discreetly used rococo shapes such as shells and volutes. Since that long ago time, the bracelet has survived beautifully and is still very wearable. We were able to purchase it in the UK, which is where its design and construction originated.
