Antique gold bracelet with sapphires & old cut diamonds, around 1910
A particularly effective, but also infinitely laborious technique for furnishing jewellery with magnificent gemstones is to use calibrated stones. In this process, channel settings are filled with faceted gemstones, usually colored stones, so close together that the impression is created that the stones are floating between their confines of metal - it seems as if one is looking out of surfaces of crystal. The bracelet here is a fine example of this technique, combining calibrated sapphires with sparkling diamonds. Seven diamonds in the old brilliant cut are arranged in a row in their bed of sapphires in such a way that it seems as if we are looking into a night sky. The stones are set in particularly delicately forged platinum, so that hardly any metallic sparkle disturbs the pleasure of the precious stones. To the right and left of the rectangular, slightly domed showpiece of the design, a delicate band of warm yellow gold attaches. Narrow, elongated links wrap softly around the arm and further emphasise the delicate, elegant impression of the bracelet. The bracelet was created in the years shortly after 1900, when jewellery with calibrated stones was a particular fashion.
