Jewel of lovers
Romantic art nouveau brooch with rose cut diamonds in gold, around 1900
Both the motifs and the materials are rarely chosen at random in antique jewellery; rather, each element had its own history, its own meaning. Today, for example, we know the clover leaf primarily as a symbol of good luck, but at the turn of the last century but one it had another connotation: the three-leaf clover symbolised intimate affection, or more precisely, two romantic appeals were associated with the meadow plant: "Think of me", and also "Be mine". The clover was thus a symbol of love, and it is no coincidence that Isolde in Gottfried von Strassburg's "Tristan und Isolde" wears a headdress of shamrocks when she meets her lover. The present brooch, made in the years around 1900, refers to a happy love, for here too we see a three-leaf clover as the central motif. On a long golden bar, two rose-cut diamonds are set in plain red gold settings, framing the central shamrock, whose leaves are formed by large rose-cut diamonds. A stem forged from red gold completes the noble plant. It is no coincidence that diamonds were chosen as the precious setting here, for in the language of gemstones, the diamond is considered the jewel of eternal love, for as the hardest mineral on earth, it stands for indestructibility - and in conjunction with the cloverleaf motif, it also stands for everlasting love. The pretty brooch with stately size found from the South of Germany to us and is a romantic piece of jewelry with beautiful historic rose cut diamonds.
