Fly Me To The Moon

Exciting vintage brooch with moonstone in gold, around 1985

Moonstones are named for their bluish-white color and shimmer, reminiscent of the glow of the Earth's satellite. Depending on the incidence of light, the surface of the moonstone changes. This effect, called adularescence, is due to the lamellar crystal structure inside the stones and results in no two stones being alike. Moonstone was first favored by fashion in the years around 1900, when delicate and ethereal, almost rapturous creations were in demand. Its never quite graspable color between white, gray and blue and its otherworldly shimmer made it particularly attractive to the designers of the time. The present brooch now stands in contrast to these turn-of-the-century ideals: It is present and expressive, massive and abstract. And yet, here too, a moonstone is the starting point of the composition. The gemstone, shaped in an oval cabochon cut, seems to glow from within itself, shimmering in various shades of blue depending on the incidence of light. A wide, hand-forged frame of gold forms the outer finish of the composition. It features an organic design language that is particularly typical of goldsmiths' jewelry of the 1980s. Particularly beautiful here is the contrast between matted and shiny polished parts. The piece of jewelry is in very good condition and is an unusual as well as expressive accessory that found its way to us from East Westphalia.
