A platinum dream

Expressive platinum ring with 0.90 ct old-cut solitaire, England circa 1960

The custom of presenting a diamond ring as an engagement gift has been documented since the late Middle Ages. However, this hardest of all gemstones was a distinct treasure and almost the exclusive privilege of the nobility. It was only after the discovery of rich deposits in South Africa in the late 19th century that broader classes were able to afford diamond jewellery. The classic engagement ring, a solitaire ring with a central diamond, is said to date back to a design by the famous jeweller Tiffany & Co. in 1886. To this day, this form of ring has remained the epitome of the engagement ring. For it brings together all the symbolism that one can expect from a piece of jewellery that is based on a promise. A wonderful engagement ring is also the present piece of jewellery from the years around 1960, which we discovered in London. At its center, the ring presents a sparkling brilliant-cut diamond weighing approximately 0.90 carats. The brilliant white gemstone is held by delicate lobes and almost floats between the stepped shoulders. A tapercut diamond is set in each of the shoulders, which leads elegantly to the narrow ring band. The ring is made of fine platinum, the most precious metal of the time. The classic and elegant ring is very well preserved and pleases with the clarity of its design and the quality of its materials.
