Expressive gold suffragette bracelet, England circa 1910
Equal rights for men and women before the state have become an integral part of our society. And yet it did not fall from the sky - the path to it was rather a hard struggle. A lot of blood and tears were shed before women were allowed to participate in political elections for the first time in Germany in 1919. This social change became possible because strong women joined forces and stood up in an organised way against prevailing injustice. Central figures of the struggle for equal rights were the so-called suffragettes (from English/French suffrage, "choice"), radical women's rights activists in Great Britain and the United States who primarily engaged in passive resistance against male domination, even to the point of disrupting official events and public hunger strikes. The suffragette movement was carried primarily by middle-class women. Jewelry set with gemstones in the colors green, white, and purple became established as their identifying mark and symbol. The bracelet presented here sets four purple amethysts and three green peridots in gold and combines them with sixteen white diamonds. These colors can be read as an acronym: The initial letters of the colours green (green), white (white), violet (violet) form a sentence that bundles everything the suffragettes fought for: "Give Women Vote" - "Give women the right to vote". The bracelet, made of so called spring links, holds the gemstones in a solid central section that is designed as a showpiece. The bracelet, which we tracked down in London, has a safety chain and box lock so it is safe to wear.
