Be a Star!

Ravishing cocktail ring with star sapphire & diamonds, probably USA, 1950s

A truly heavenly appearance is this exciting 1950s cocktail ring. At its centre, the jewel presents an exquisite gemstone arrangement with a large star sapphire at its centre. Cut into an oval cabochon, the beguiling gemstone of approximately 7.75 carats displays a milky, light blue color reminiscent of a misty summer morning. In direct light, the stone displays a distinct, six-rayed star. This effect, known as asterism, is caused by inclusions of the mineral rutile, whose needle-shaped crystals refract light. An entourage of eighteen brilliant-cut diamonds weighing approximately 0.54 carats together frame the center stone. Fine white gold settings hold the stones and lend the jewel an ethereal lightness despite its size. At the shoulders, fine leaf ornaments lead over to the simple ring rail. With its elegant design, the ring represents a seamless continuation of the style of the pre-war period. Only the modern full cut of the diamonds distinguishes the ring from pieces of the 1930s. The ring, which found its way to us in the English county of Essex, is beautifully preserved and a truly exceptional piece of vintage jewelry of heavenly elegance. An independent appraisal by the German Society for Gemstone Appraisal Idar-Oberstein confirms the quality of the materials used.

Cocktail rings were once considered rebellious because they made a clear statement: In the 1920s, ladies in the USA wore these large pieces of jewelry to parties where alcohol was served despite Prohibition, often disguised in colorful cocktails. Prominently placed on the index finger of the left hand, the message was clear: Look, I have fun in life and know how to enjoy it! Today there are no more illegal cocktail parties, at least not for adults - but "statement pieces" are still big cocktail rings today and with their often lush trimming they stand for a good-humoured luxury. Today they are not only worn on festive occasions like on the red carpets, galas or award ceremonies, where it glitters and sparkles on the fingers of the prominent ladies, but whenever you feel like it!
