All good omens
Vintage earrings with chinese coral carving, 2nd half of the 20th century
The coral (shanhu 珊瑚) has a special significance in Chinese culture. It belongs to the so-called eight auspicious treasures and symbolizes a long life and professional success. In ancient China, coral was believed to be an "iron tree" that grew under the sea and bloomed only once every 100 years. The red colour of the coral made it a popular talisman, as the colour was considered a symbol of luck, wealth and joy in ancient China. All good omens surround the decorative material from which this pair of earrings is made. The pendants each present a round plaque carved from a piece of deep sea coral. The openwork features graceful floral designs. Artfully executed in rich detail, the carving exudes Far Eastern grace and spirituality. Simple white gold settings hold the tablets. Three suspended coral pampels each add a gorgeous look to the design. The practical hinged bristles are crafted from high karat yellow gold, making them particularly well tolerated. Created in the second half of the 20th century, the pair is a beautiful piece of Chinese culture that delights with its warm play of color.
China, the land of smiles, with its millennia-old culture has always fascinated Europe. It is impossible to imagine European art of the last centuries without chinoiseries, Chinese arts and crafts, especially porcelain, were a status symbol at all European courts and a sign of discriminating taste. Then, at the beginning of the 20th century, when long-distance travel became easier, trade relations could be expanded and the Middle Kingdom thus moved closer, genuine Chinese arts and crafts also became affordable for the middle classes.
