The scent of lavender
Charming Victorian Pendant Brooch with Amethysts & Pearls, circa 1900
Amethyst is the violet variation of the mineral quartz. Its name, from the Greek "amethystos" - "counteracting intoxication", expresses the ancient belief that its wearer was immune to the intoxicating effects of wine. "It is worn mostly only in rings, and is generally held to be good against drunkenness and melancholy: Although this virtue is disputed by many, it cannot be without special properties, although they are unknown to us", already knew "Der aufrichtige Jubelier", 1729. However, no matter how much truth is to be attributed to its use as an amulet - in the years around 1900, the amethyst was valued above all for its beautiful colour. In the present pendant of the late Victorian period, the lavender-colored stone is presented to us in a particularly elegant manner. An airy wreath of delicate leaf ornaments, set with fine seed pearls, unfolds around a central stone in a rectangular step-cut. The cream-coloured luster of the pearls picks up the shine of the gold and harmoniously complements the pastel play of colours. Four smaller amethysts complete the symmetrical composition. This piece of jewellery, which can be worn both as a pendant and as a brooch, was forged from a 15-carat gold alloy that was only used in England until 1932. An additional fine gold plating gives it its velvety shimmer. The piece exemplifies the taste of the time for elegant designs made of coloured stones and seed pearls, which, as here, were designed in the so-called Garland style.
