Peridots & Pearls

Charming pendant with chain in gold, Great Britain circa 1905

Two faceted peridots and eighteen natural pearls bring out a fresh and spring-like feel in this early 20th century pendant. The pendant, which we spotted in London, combines the pearls into a diamond shape with small leaves of a laurel wreath. A round perdiot pendulums in the center and a drop-shaped stone is suspended from the composition in a movable way. The jewel is made of gold with a fineness of 15 carats, an alloy that was only used in England until 1932. Jewellery with peridot and seed pearls was a great fashion in Britain in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The intensely luminous stones, legend has it that they were Cleopatra's favourite, arrived in the mother country from the colony of Egypt. The combination with pearls supports the wonderful colourfulness of the peridots in the best way, as well as the warm shine of the gold. With its original gold chain, the pendant can be worn immediately. A comparable piece of jewellery can also be found in David Bennet and Daniela Mascetti: Understanding Jewellery, Woodbridge 2006, on page 216.
