First green

British brooch with pearls & demantoids in gold, around 1910

This piece of jewellery from Great Britain enchants with its unusual trimming. The brooch combines shimmering creamy white natural pearls with intensely green sparkling demantoids in warm, shiny gold. Green and white, the colours of the first flowers in spring, snowdrops or white daffodils, shine at us here as a springtime greeting after the long dark season. Demantoids are a special form of garnet, which may be surprising at first. Well known are the deep red of the pyrope garnets from Bohemia as well as the almandine, which is a convincing red with a fine admixture of blue. But also the demantoid with its intensive green is a garnet. It was first found in the Russian Ural Mountains in 1855 and was initially known as "Ural emerald". Carl Fabergé, for example, used it in numerous works for the Russian court, and it also enjoyed great popularity in Great Britain around the turn of the century. This brooch, designed in the shape of a quatrefoil with inserted leaf ornaments, is a fine testimony to this. Made in the years around 1910, the piece of jewellery is beautifully preserved and came to us in London.
