Diamond Bouquet

Brooch with 1,34 ct Diamonds in Platinum, Around 1940

Flowers and blossoms have been motifs in jewellery throughout the centuries. At the same time, they adapted to the respective fashions: In the late 18th century they were colourful and playful, in the middle of the 19th century they were set "en tremblant" and naturalistic, and in the Art Deco period they were chic, white and cool. An elegant bouquet has also become the motif of this brooch. We see a large flower held by an elegant bow. The brooch picks up on the "drapery" trend of those years and stages the ribbon wound around the flower as a sculpturally draped length of fabric. A total of 106 diamonds weighing approximately 1.34 ct make the brooch sparkle with every movement. They are set in light platinum, which does not tint the white diamonds. It was not until the 1930s that platinum had begun to be used more frequently for solid pieces of jewellery; previously the precious metal had been too expensive and it had only been used as a thin overlay on gold. This floral brooch was created in the years around 1940 and is a piece of late Art Deco jewellery that again ventured bold sweeps and three-dimensional shapes. We discovered it in London.
