Game, set, match!

Antique tennis brooch with diamond & citrine in gold, Prague circa 1910

The first decades of the 20th century were the golden years of tennis in Europe and the USA. Everywhere the young ladies and gentlemen played the elegant game. A new fashion was born, quite emancipatory, as the necessity of the sport helped to justify no longer hiding the woman's body under mountains of fabric. An international exchange developed and the first sports celebrities toured the world. Tennis as the game of the Jeunesse Dorée of the interwar period was finally given a permanent monument by Giorgio Bassani in his Giardino dei Finzi Contini. Against the backdrop of the rise of fascism, the protagonists are left with only tennis as an escape from an increasingly narrow world. Here, sport is a symbol of a bygone, peaceful, joyful time when clear rules applied instead of arbitrariness and losing only meant getting another chance in the next match. The brooch presented here testifies to the fact that the game with ball and racket had also found its friends in Austria-Hungary, more precisely, in Prague. The rose gold brooch is designed in the shape of a tennis racket. A diamond sets the handle of the racket, the cover is made of finely sawn platinum. A citrine is set into the racket as a tennis ball and sparkles enticingly. Who wants to play the next game? The brooch is in very good condition. The citrine marking the ball on the racquet has probably been replaced in recent times.
