Dutch diamond brooch in feather form, Amsterdam circa 1910
Already on the paintings of the old Dutchmen like Frans Hals or Rembrandt large ostrich feathers are encountered as hat ornaments. Every nobleman and every distinguished lady who could afford such a feather finery completed the wardrobe with exotic feathers. A speciality among the traditional pieces of jewellery from the Netherlands is therefore to this day a brooch shape that refers to this fashion of the golden age: the feather brooch. Known as a "veer broche" in the local language, it is also classically worn on the hat or cap and thus evokes the wealthy merchants of the 17th century. According to the hallmark, this brooch was made in Amsterdam and dates from the beginning of the 20th century. It is made of silver and is richly decorated with diamond roses. Starting from a rosette we see curved, stylized heron feathers, which seem to move open-worked and to great effect. And yet it is an artistic mimicry that is demonstrated here in silver and ten diamonds. The feather brooch here is a particularly fine testament to this fashion and an exciting piece of jewelry history.
