Spring roses from her mouth....
Victorian shell gem of Flora as brooch in gold, around 1880
"And as she spoke, she breathed spring roses from her mouth, Chloris was I called Flora." Thus Ovid has the goddess Flora speak, who only in his verses is equated with the otherwise untraceable nymph Chloris. In Roman mythology Flora was the goddess of blossom, spring, and fertility, and was thus always represented as a beautiful woman in the prime of her life. The Floralia, a festival celebrated by the Roman people, paid homage to her every year between April and May. More popular than she was in Roman times, however, was Flora in the Renaissance, when the gods of antiquity were rediscovered. We find her depicted by numerous artists of the time, such as Botticelli in his famous painting "Primavera". When, from the middle of the 19th century, Botticelli and with him the artists of the Renaissance once again experienced great interest, the present shell came into being. The Italian gem engraver succeeded in depicting every single curl of the goddess in a particularly beautiful way and also artistically let the individual rose petals of her headdress emerge plastically. Noteworthy in this work is the use of the different coloured layers of the shell to enhance the platiness of the depiction. Thus the female figure stands out in creamy white against a reddish grey ground and the roses in her hair are effectively cut into a dark brown layer of the shell. A simple setting of gold holds the graceful goddess securely and makes her wearable as a brooch.
