Vintage butterfly brooch & pendant with baroque pearl, 1980s
Jewellery in the form of insects first enjoyed great popularity in the last third of the 19th century. Butterflies, dragonflies, but also spiders and flies were allowed to settle on the shoulders and décolletés of ladies, where they caused a great stir and stimulated conversation as conversation pieces. First in the 1950s and then in the 1980s, the figurative piece of jewellery as a conversation piece enjoyed further heyday. The jewellery was to be large and eye-catching, yellow gold and set with brightly coloured stones. The present butterfly fulfils these requirements excellently and picks up the insect theme once again, which was last in fashion a century before it was created. A large baroque pearl with a brilliant luster represents its body, while the wings are made of gold and set with rubies and diamonds. Two blue sapphires last form his eyes. A brooch on the back and a pendant loop allow the jewel to be worn in two ways. As its hallmark reveals, the cute butterfly was once imported to France. From there it made its way to London, until it finally found its way to us in Berlin.
