Charming Belle Époque diamond ring in gold & platinum, Berlin circa 1910

With the invention of gaslight and then electric light at the end of the 19th century, glistening brightness suddenly filled the ballrooms of Europe. No longer dark, yellow candlelight, but the white glow of hundreds of incandescent lamps made the ladies' jewellery shine and glitter as never before. No wonder that in the wake of these developments a new fashion in jewellery also emerged: white jewels made of diamonds and surfaces made of platinum responded to the new lighting conditions and replaced the previous more colourful designs. Jewellery in general became increasingly richly set with sparkling gems to create an ever more luxurious and rich appearance. At the great balls in Paris, London and St Petersburg, fine diamond jewellery was presented, tiaras, brooches and rings, all dreams in white diamonds. This delicate ring is a child of this period. It is made of gold with a platinum face designed in the shape of a quatrefoil. Set in the center of the design are four sparkling old-cut diamonds surrounded by a so called shadow gap. Worked flat and forged by hand, the beautiful piece of jewelry is a romantic and fine Belle Époque ring that is just waiting for a new wearer. The ring is comfortable to wear thanks to its flat design.

According to its stamp, the ring was made for the Wilhelm Müller company in Berlin. At that time, the headquarters of the family business was located in Gertraudenstraße in Berlin Mitte. Miraculously, it survived the destruction of World War II and still stands today on Berlin's Spittelmarkt as a reminder of the imperial era. At the turn of the 20th century, the Müller company was a leading jewellery retailer and known beyond the borders of the capital for its high-quality goods.
