Pearls For Matinée
Vintage Pearl Necklace With White Gold & Ruby Clasp, Circa 1970
Did you know that pearl necklaces of different lengths also go by different names? A short necklace worn very close to the neck, for instance, is called a "choker", which is derived from the English word for "choke", even though it should of course adorn and not choke. A "Collier Chute" is slightly longer than the choker and consists of pearls whose diameter increases towards the center. Its name derives from the French: "chute" means a drop or plunge and describes the graduated arrangement of the pearls. This 48 cm long pearl necklace is a long, classic necklace in a Matinée length. The fine necklace shines in the warm glow of 43 wonderfully large saltwater cultured pearls, all individually knotted. There are 41 pearls with more than 9.2 millimeters in diameter and two smaller pearls that transition to the clasp. The large decorative clasp made of high karat white gold features five delicate flowers and is set with small rubies. This creates a simultaneously elegant and pleasant warm impression of white and red, which wonderfully complements the light cream tone of the pearls. A luxurious vintage classic!
In many cultures, the pearl has a deep symbolic character. In China, for example, pearls are a symbol of wealth, wisdom and dignity; in Japan, they signify good fortune; in India, the abundance of children. The pearl was also considered both an aphrodisiac and a cure for melancholy and madness. It is also a symbol of tears. Even among the Greeks and Romans, pearls were highly sought after as jewelry. The Greek term "margarita" was also used to refer to the beloved, as it were, a term that has survived to this day in the name Margaret. In the Middle Ages, pearls were considered a sign of love for God, and thus numerous fine monastic works made of tiny river pearls have survived. There are a variety of different pearl shells that can produce quite different pearls, so the study of pearls is a science in itself. Pearl jewelry belongs classically to each good basic equipment of a lady - in the jewelry box the classical pearl chain may not be missing. With her you are always well dressed, she decorates for every occasion.
