Noble Art Deco ring with old cut diamonds, around 1930

In the Art Deco era, a special basic shape for jewellery began its triumphant advance: The shield, usually designed as a square or elongated hexagon. It met the preference of those years for graphic forms, for jewellery designs that presented their decoration two-dimensionally instead of sculpturally. Above all, however, the basic shape of the shield was perfectly suited to show off the filigree processing techniques of the time. The present ring, which found its way to us from the Palatinate, belongs to this elegant type of jewellery. In the center of the shield-shaped ring face shines a wonderful old-cut diamond of about 0.60 ct with expressive brilliance. Fourteen other diamonds set the ring face and give it an ethereal appearance that is alive with countless white light reflections. With the finest sawing work and pointed shadow gaps, this piece of jewellery seems to dissolve into a mesh of geometric elements. Millegrains additionally structure the metal. This infinitely filigree, elaborate work is only possible thanks to a platinum overlay on the white gold used as a base: for the former is far harder than the comparatively soft gold, so that such decorations can only hold their own. A wonderful and wearable piece of Art Deco craftsmanship that has survived the time since the Weimar Republic in excellent condition.
