vena amoris

Vintage pair of wedding rings in high karat yellow gold, dated 1953

Wedding rings have been known since ancient times. Even the ancient Egyptians and Romans wore the wedding ring on the ring finger of the left hand, as it was believed that a vein, the so-called vena amoris (Latin for 'love vein'), led directly from this finger to the heart. While many Western countries adhere to this custom, in Germany, Central Europe and Scandinavia it is customary to wear the ring on the right hand. The shape of the rings often changed. Rings in the form of two interlocking hands are known, sometimes made of gold, but also of iron. Simple ribbon rings or richly ornamented pieces of jewellery - depending on the financial possibilities, the wedding ring was often used to express one's status. Today it is mostly a simple, restrained band of gold that is chosen as a sign of marriage. The pair of wedding rings here from 1953 is designed in this classic form. Both rings are forged from high karat yellow gold that has a restrained warm, rich shine. The domed bands have rounded edges, enhancing their comfort. There is plenty of room inside for your own engraving, a date or your partner's name when the existing engravings are polished out. The rings are in excellent condition and ready to seal the bond of life anew. They are currently sized 57 and 59.5, but can easily be adjusted by our goldsmith.
