Edwardian Gypsy Ring with Rubies & Diamonds in Gold, Chester 1909

In the years around 1875, the so-called "Gypsy Ring" was introduced as a novelty into the world of jewellery design - and immediately enjoyed particular popularity because it was so uncomplicated to wear. A ring of this type usually consists of a plain, golden hoop in which the gemstones were set into the gold in such a way that they terminate with the height of the ring. In the present ring we see an example of such a ring, dating from 1909, which can be accurately dated by its hallmarking inside the ring band, and which also tells us that it was made in the English city of Chester. A linear arrangement of two old-cut diamonds and three red rubies in carée settings is set into the upwardly expanding band ring of yellow gold with a fineness of 18 carats. In earlier times, symbolic meaning was attached to these gemstones: thus, in the language of gemstones, the red rubies were supposed to stand for love, while the diamonds symbolized eternity. This makes the ring particularly suitable as a gift of love - even today, more than a century after its creation.

England, shortly before 1900: The Empire is at the height of its power. The old Queen Victoria has brought peace and economic success to her subjects. Luxury and wealth reach ever broader strata in London. The new style of Art Nouveau, or Style Liberty, as it is known in England, which originated in France, is eagerly adopted, as it reflects everything that is currently in fashion: lightness, elegance and a touch of cosmopolitanism.
