Family Ties

A commemorative ring with pearls & enamel, London 1897

The turn of the year 1892 / 93 held two strokes of fate in store for a young lady in the south of England. First, her brother died in December 1892, probably while still young, and thus caused the family a sad Christmas. But that was not enough: bowed in pain, his mother also followed him into the grave in January of the new year. That our nameless lady could not so easily get over these losses is well understood by all. In fact, her loss continued to occupy her mind for a long time. In 1897, five years later, she bought a gold ring and had it made into a keepsake. A heart framed by two squares, one for her brother and one for her mother, are set with pearls and covered with turquoise enamel, the colour of forget-me-nots. Inside the ring that was thus created, and which we are pleased to present to you here safe and sound, she also had an engraving made. It holds the story, as we can reconstruct it, until today: "My Dear Mother & Brother Jan 93. Dec 92" - (Dedicated) to my beloved mother and brother, (died in) January 93 (respectively) December 92. May they rest in peace.
