From the heyday of the Rococo

Romantic Diamond Ring in Silver & Gold, Western Europe circa 1780

Some fashions are short-lived, even in the world of jewellery. It is therefore all the more interesting to find a historical piece whose shape represents the original version of a type that is still popular today: The entourage ring, in which a slightly larger center stone is camouflaged by smaller gemstones, giving the impression of a precious flower. Carmoization originated around the middle of the 17th century. But such early examples are rare, because gemstones, usually diamonds, were always very costly and all too often reused in new jewelry in later times. Here, however, an original design has survived, in the form of a ring made in Western Europe in the years around 1780. A rose-cut diamond shines in the center, surrounded by a wreath of other diamond roses. The stones are held in closed silver settings, typical of the period, which are effectively patinated to form a dark background for the soft shimmering of the stones. The old diamond cuts give the diamonds a soft shine and their own character. The ring rail was renewed in the late 19th century, but still blends harmoniously with the piece of jewellery. Made wearable again by this successful addition, the ring has stood the test of time. This makes the ring not only a precious collector's item, but also an individual gift of love.
