Large vintage statement ring with rock crystal & diamonds, 1990s
Rock crystal, the colourless, transparent quartz, has fascinated jewellery designers throughout the ages. Due to its inner structure, the crystal can be carved and engraved particularly well - and thus, already in ancient times, artful objects such as bowls and dishes as well as jewellery were created from this special mineral. In the Middle Ages, reliquaries were made of rock crystal in order to both display and protect the precious relics of the saints, and in the early modern era, vases made of rock crystal were collected. Jewellery made of rock crystal also flourished in the Art Deco period. Suzanne Belperron, for example, became famous not least for her rock crystal rings and clips. The ring presented here is a testimony to this tradition, which is still alive today. It is made of high-carat white gold and holds a large, satin-finished rock crystal. Six waves of white gold set with diamonds hold the crystal in place and seem to give it its shape: The shimmering crystal pushes out from between the gold, appearing soft and almost like fabric, like a turban or a pillow. The ring is not marked or signed - so we don't know who created it. But in fact, in recent decades, several of the major jewellery houses have presented rings with rock crystal in white gold settings, inspired by Art Deco jewellery. In the 1970s, David Webb from New York was one of the first to make a name for himself with this style, as was Vhernier from Milan in the 1990s. The ring presented here was probably also created in the 1990s, based on its design and workmanship.
