The art of contrast
Elegant Art Deco brooch with natural pearls, diamonds & onyx, around 1930
Bar brooches, brooches, pins - all these are names for a form of jewelry that enjoyed great popularity in the first decades of the 20th century. They were worn in many different ways, and particularly creatively during the Art Deco period. For example, the German fashion journal "Die Dame" stated in its 1925 fashion notes that people now wore "rather voluminous pins, which always look best at the front of the waist as a clasp or finish to an insert." But they could also be seen as the finial of a blouse collar, or even pinned over garçonnes' ties. Here now is a particularly characteristic Art Deco design. Geometric and contrasting, the brooch combines some of the most beloved design features and materials of its era. Four natural pearls with a fine luster are set side by side, interrupted by pairs of diamonds in old cuts. Surrounding them is a narrow band of calibrated-cut onyx, which makes the white gemstones appear even brighter in contrast. The combination of metals is also typical of the period, as a fine layer of platinum has been added to the base metal of white gold on the front. This procedure can only be found in jewellery of the early 20th century, because the early white gold - patented only in 1913 - was often still slightly yellowish. This yellow tint is only visible here under a magnifying glass. The brooch is in excellent condition. An exemplary jewel of the Art Deco!
