Elegant art nouveau brooch with diamonds & jade, around 1905

Just as the first blossoms of the year, the snowdrop, the lily of the valley and the crocuses herald the new year and the restart of life after the dark winter, Art Nouveau in the evening years of the 19th century also wanted to dare a new beginning in the field of art and life as a whole. New forms in architecture, in painting and also in arts and crafts were to help the whole person to more beauty, freedom and also more happiness. No wonder that the growth and development of plants was one of the most important sources of inspiration for the artists of that time. Especially in France and Belgium, plant forms even became the epitome of this style, just think of the creations of Victor Horta and Hector Guimard. But Otto Wagner also experimented a great deal with floral decorations in Vienna, for example on his houses on the left bank of the Wienzeile. With them, essential ideas of the artists could be implemented particularly well. The brooch presented here is a fine example of this development. For the design in the typical moving forms of Art Nouveau presents a green jade in the form of a peony rose. The jade, which may have been carved in China, is presented with small diamonds and platinum leaves as if it were growing out of the brooch: a beautiful combination of Art Nouveau and the love of the Far East, which was just being discovered as an artistic model by painters such as van Gogh and Whistler in those years. The brooch reached us in a box from a British jeweller, where it may have been purchased: We discovered it in Great Britain which shows that these so French forms were also loved and appreciated in the United Kingdom.
