On the recommendation of the "Bazar"
Elegant earrings with diamonds & pearls in gold & platinum, around 1900/2020
Earrings of small size, but sometimes of great preciousness, enjoyed particular popularity in the late 19th century: "small pendants are still worn with pleasure. A pearl, a large diamond close to the earlobe and, at most, a falling stone are perfectly sufficient", it was said in 1897 in the influential ladies' journal "Der Bazar. Illustrirte Damen-Zeitung", 43rd volume 1897, No. 43, p. 577. Our goldsmith took this recommendation to heart when designing the earrings presented here. The earrings each present two old-cut diamonds in their antique settings of the years around 1900, weighing about 0.96 ct together. As was common in that era, they were chosen primarily for their fire and brilliance; qualities that made them especially desirable in the then-new electric light. Each larger stone, weighing about 0.45 ct, sparkles beneath a smaller old-cut diamond of about 0.03 ct, both stones joined by small bars attached to their platinum settings. To the brilliance of the diamonds, our goldsmith has added the creamy luster of two large pearls. This results in a slight, harmonious gradient in size from top to bottom, as well as an elegant transition in color from the white of the gemstones to the cream of the pearls to the luminous tone of the gold. I wonder if the Bazar correspondents and readers suspected that this jewelry fashion of its time would once be considered timeless and classic - precisely because of the reduction to two precious jewels each? The earrings were created from antique elements in our workshop. The earrings are now waiting for a wearer who values a classic and multi-combinable jewellery wardrobe.
