Passing the baton

Elegant Art Deco stick pin with diamonds, around 1920

Hardly part of the repertoire of modern goldsmiths and jewellers today, the stick pin was once one of the most popular pieces of jewellery of the early 20th century and could be found in every lady's jewellery wardrobe. From daytime specimens in gold and set with pearls or colourful gemstones to quality diamond pins for the evening, the stick brooch took many forms. The brooch presented here is a typical representative of this type of jewellery and shines in the colour white typical of the early Art Deco period. Its widening center field presents three old-cut diamonds in a row. The stones are staggered in size and surrounded by more than twelve small rose-cut diamonds. Fine sawn joints arabesquely divide the surface and give the brooch a pulsating dynamism that seems to push from the center to the edges. The brooch is made of white gold, a new material at the time, and bears a platinum face. The change of fashions has not diminished the versatility of the bar pin and so this elegant piece can be worn to great effect on a blouse, the lapel of a blazer or a coat.
