Chrysolithus Turmale

Elegant vintage cufflinks with tourmalines in gold, around 1975

Tourmaline is a gemstone that is able to captivate with its diverse play of colors. From blue, to yellow, pink and green, almost all colors occur and its wonderful radiance makes the tourmaline since ancient times to one of the most valued gemstones. The name tourmaline comes from the Sinhalese word thuramali (තුරමලි) or thoramalli (තෝරමල්ලි), which was commonly used for colorful gemstones found in Sri Lanka. For Europe the name was first recorded in writing in 1707, or in 1711 under the name Chrysolithus Turmale. Larger quantities were not exported from Sri Lanka to Europe until the middle of the 18th century. At that time, the Dutch East India Company practically held a trade monopoly for tourmalines. Two of these special gems are showcased in this pair of stylish cuff links in high karat yellow gold. The cushion shape of the tall tourmalica bochons dictates the shape of the fronts; the gold framing is restrained and simple in design. Two bars lead to practical hinged toggles that make it easy to put on the cufflinks. Made around 1975, the buttons are beautifully preserved. The high quality pair convinces with its lively yet tasteful design, which makes a nice eye-catcher on the shirt and the extraordinary clarity of the tourmalines. We discovered the pair here in Berlin, where it was probably made.
