Belle du jour (et nuit)
Elegant bangle with sapphires & diamonds, France circa 1910
Day and night, light and dark, celebration and silence, desire and renunciation - so many moments in life achieve their charm only through the contrast with their counterpart. The bangle presented here also achieves its special fascination from such a tension. Forged from high-carat gold, the bangle presents on its front a wonderful arrangement of seven dark blue sapphires and eight glittering old-cut diamonds. The gemstones are set in airy silver settings that perfectly complement their cool play of colour. In addition to a stylistic classification of the individual forms from which jewellery is composed, the cuts of the gemstones used and the type of metalworking, hallmarks on antique jewellery sometimes also allow a fairly precise dating. The present bangle, for example, shows the head of a small rhinoceros on the catch of its clasp - a hallmark that was only used in France from April 8 to May 8, 1910. But what exactly does the stamp mean? The rhinoceros is a census stamp, which was used in the course of a one-time inventory of goods. At that time, the state wanted to know how many pieces of jewellery made of precious metals were stored in the jewellery shops and goldsmith's workshops. Each object was inventoried for this purpose and, to prevent double counting, hallmarked with the rhinoceros. The bangle must therefore have been made before May 8, 1910, but was not yet sold on the cut-off date. The workmanship and choice of materials also allow us to date it securely to the first years of the 20th century. A safety chain prevents the loss of the hoop, which came to us in England and has survived very well. A wonderful piece of jewelry in classic color that can be worn on many occasions.
