Cleopatra would be delighted

Elegant Art Deco ring with peridot & diamonds, Great Britain circa 1920

This ring from the 1920s, which we discovered in London, is colourful and elegant. The cross-layered ring face presents an enchanting setting of a wonderfully clear peridot in a strong lime green. The stone is round and faceted and glows with gorgeous radiance. A total of six glittering Old-European-cut diamonds accompany the green gemstone on the stepped ring shoulders. The peridot, supposedly Cleopatra's favourite stone, in whose homeland there are still significant deposits today, experienced a veritable fashion in England at the turn of the 20th century. One could say that it became the favourite stone of those years, as it is found in many pieces of turn-of-the-century jewellery, and late Victorian jewellery is unthinkable without the lively green of the peridot. Forged from high carat yellow gold, this expressive ring is topped with platinum in the area of the ring face. Its geometrically expressive design language betrays the influence of Art Deco. A wonderful eye-catcher for the hand in spring-fresh colours.

The main mining area for peridot from ancient times until well into the 20th century was St. John's Island in the Red Sea. The island, also known as Zabargad, is uninhabited and the subject of many myths and legends. The ancient author Pliny the Elder knows it as "Topazos", other authors of antiquity think that wild cavemen lived there, defending their treasures against all strangers.
