Elegant marquise ring with natural pearl & diamonds, around 1910
The British artist James Abbott McNeill Whistler titled his 1861-82 painting "Symphony in White, No. 1", which he vehemently denied any meaning in terms of content: it was the composition, the pure beauty of the painting, that gave it its value. Whistler was thus one of the founders of a tradition of artists and craftsmen who saw beauty itself as the highest value. Even into the early 20th century, works of art and jewelry were created that wanted to be only one thing: Dazzlingly beautiful. The present ring stands at the end of this tradition, which faded away with the end of the Belle Époque due to the First World War. But it still upholds the ideals of that "beautiful era" that valued white jewels above all else: Like Whistler's painting, it shines in pure white and shows as a symphony of different variations of this non-color. The creamy warm luster of a natural pearl, the brilliance of diamonds and the cool metallic surface of platinum are juxtaposed here. The ring head is in the so-called marquise or navette shape. A narrow rail connects to it and makes the white composition wearable as a ring.
