Red lips should be kissed

Elegant Marquise Ring with Ruby & Diamonds in Gold, Great Britain circa 1900

Whether marquise, navette or shuttle ring - all these designations refer to the characteristic, pointed oval shape that this ring also has. Popularly worn as early as the 19th century, it lasted right up to the Art Deco years. But why "Marquise"? Supposedly, so the story goes, the designation for this shape appeared as early as the Rococo period. Louis XV is said to have commissioned a gemstone cutter to invent a cut that reminded him of the smile of his mistress, the equally beautiful and influential Marquise de Pompadour. At the center of this ring is a red luminous ruby, which, like the origin of the shape, has a romantic connotation, since in the 19th century in particular, people saw in this gemstone a reference to love. "Rubies are especially suited to young lovers [...] In general, it is considered the emblem of the most passionate and ardent love," wrote the ladies' journal Bazar in November 1886. Here, the red gemstone is surrounded by 14 old-cut diamonds of about 0.42 ct together, which further enhance its colour. The ring was made around 1900, when not only such rings but also jewellery made of gold set with platinum were booming. It is excellently preserved and is both a wearable collector's item and a gift of love with rich references to the history of jewellery.
