Red lips are to be kissed!

Elegant Marquise Ring with Ruby & Diamonds in Gold, circa 1895

Jewellery in the so-called "marquise" shape are often and gladly seen objects today, but their shape and thus their meaning is rarely questioned. But the story behind them is a very romantic one: Louis XV is said to have commissioned his court jeweler to invent a new diamond cut in the years around 1750. The king wanted a gemstone that would resemble the shape of the lips of his mistress, the Marquise Jeanne de Pompadour (1721-1764). This two-pointed shape subsequently developed into a major jewellery fashion which dominated the second half of the 18th century and then experienced a significant renaissance in the years around the penultimate turn of the century. This ring, which dates from around 1895, is set with a red ruby and thirty shimmering diamonds in the historic rose cut. Forged from 14-carat gold, an openwork gallery raises the setting to great effect without making the ring difficult to wear. The ruby fits nicely into the history of the marquise ring, as it was considered a badge of passionate love in 19th century jewel language. A wonderful piece of jewellery that came to us from Saxony and, according to its hallmark, was also made in Germany.
