Elegant ring with old cut diamond in gold & platinum, 1920s

Today, the diamond solitaire is considered the classic engagement ring - a tradition that, according to the story, has its origins as early as 1477. In that year, Mary of Burgundy received a diamond engagement ring from Archduke Maximilian of Austria. However, it was not until the late years of the 19th century, 1886 to be exact, that the image of the diamond solitaire was coined as a classic engagement ring. Louis Comfort Tiffany invented a setting that elevated the diamond above the rail, allowing plenty of light to reach it. Since then, numerous variations on the theme of the diamond solitaire have emerged. This ring presents its large old-cut half-carat between the curved ends of its rail, as a so-called crossover ring. Although crossover rings were already known around 1900, the theme has been implemented here in a more reduced form, in keeping with the taste of Art Deco. Smaller diamonds in platinum settings line the ends, so that the ring appears white when viewed from above. Only at the sides does the gold of the ring band become visible. According to its hallmark, the ring was made in Germany. It is in very good condition and can be worn daily.
