Elegant ring with large mabé pearl & diamonds in white gold, around 1920
Mabé pearl is a special form of cultured pearl, which is known in East Asia since the 13th century. They are also called cultured shell or cultured blister pearls. Their name is derived from the Japanese name of the winged oyster (Pteria penguin) Mabe-gai, which is good for cultured shell pearls but not for cultured solid pearls. Unlike round cultured pearls, which develop in the connective tissue in the center of the mollusk, small hemispheres of clay or nacre are inserted between the shell and mantle of the mollusk to cultivate mabe pearls. There, after a short time, they grow solid and covered with a shimmering layer of pearl substance. Such a pearl is the center of this ring. It is white with a rosy, silky luster. A ring of diamonds surrounds the pearl: old European cut diamonds are set here alternating with diamond roses. Together with the cool white gold, this creates a triad of whites, from the luster of the pearl to the sparkle of the diamonds to the shine of the metal. A wonderful detail of the ring is that it looks perfect even from below. This is because great attention has been paid to the perfection of detail here: Thus, not only the top, but also the bottom is detailed and finely crafted. The mabé pearl is set on a shell of mother-of-pearl that shimmers through the delicate under-cadence. And the openwork, lace-like under-cadence itself, hand-sawn and of the finest finesse, makes the ring appear artful and elegant even from those angles that no one will see worn. A secret, only for its wearer.
