Play of Lights
Elegant shuttle ring with diamonds in gold & platinum, Germany circa 1930
The goldsmiths of the first decades of the 20th century produced pieces of jewellery of previously unseen precision craftsmanship. Narrow, sawn shadow gaps, the most delicate mille grips - all this was made possible by the application of a thin layer of platinum on gold, because the white precious metal lends greater hardness to the actually soft gold and made such techniques possible in the first place. Pure white materiality - diamonds, pearls, and platinum - was also particularly in demand, and through the artistic surface treatment, the pieces of jewellery seemed to consist entirely of light and shadow. This ring is a typical design of that fashion. A large diamond in the old brilliant cut, a so-called "Old European Cut" weighing around 0.90 ct, forms the centre of the show side of the ring. From it, the finely structured, symmetrical design develops in all directions. The ring head lies broadly in the axis of the finger and covers almost an entire finger limb. Fine sweeps in delicate saw work structure its surface. Smaller diamonds in a transitional cut occupy the surfaces lined with mille handles and add additional points of light. In total, around 1.62 ct of diamonds have been set. The ring is in very good condition. In later times, the ring size was changed once and some of the diamonds were renewed. The addition, however, was done with care and the appearance of the ring is just as convincing as it was on the first day, some 90 years ago now.
