Elegant solitaire ring with diamond in yellow & white gold, Germany, 1950s

Today, the diamond solitaire is considered the classic engagement ring - a tradition that, according to the story, has its origins as early as 1477. In that year, Mary of Burgundy received a diamond engagement ring from Archduke Maximilian of Austria. However, it was not until the late years of the 19th century, 1886 to be exact, that the image of the diamond solitaire was coined as a classic engagement ring. Louis Comfort Tiffany invented a setting that elevated the diamond above the band, allowing plenty of light to reach it. Since then, numerous variations on the theme of the diamond solitaire have emerged. This ring is a typical example of the post-war period, as we can find it in German catalogues from the time of the economic miracle. It presents its white diamond in a modern brilliant cut, surrounded by a narrow diamond of white gold. The ring band, on the other hand, is made of yellow gold and decorated with fine, nostalgic engravings. In this way, the old and new jewellery art of the time are united in a timeless design. The ring is in excellent condition. It bears a German hallmark of fineness on the inside.
