Elegant Toi-et-moi ring with diamonds in white gold, Germany circa 1930

Some types of jewellery, popular over years and decades, change only slightly; they merely adapt to the conventions of the time in terms of style and design. This ring, for example, is such a piece of jewellery. With two stones at the ends of the curved ring rails, it is a so-called "toi-et-moi" ring, as was popular at the turn of the century. Here, however, it is indebted to the clear-lined, timeless modernity of Art Deco, and unlike earlier examples of this type, it shows itself with strictly graphic ornamentation. Two white diamonds are the protagonists of the ring. They are designed in the so-called transitional cut, because the modern brilliant cut, the so-called full cut, was to become established only in the post-war period. Two smaller rose-cut diamonds are set alongside them. They are merely separated by two polished, short platinum bands - but as simple as this design is, it is equally effective and ingenious. It is only through tiny tricks like these platinum bands and the rectangular settings of the diamond roses that the ring exudes the unmistakable aesthetic of Art Deco. The ring sets the diamonds in white gold, a material that only really caught on during this Art Deco era and was popular for modern jewels of this type due to its cool aesthetic. It is very well preserved and found its way to us from Anhalt.
