Above all fashions
Elegant necklace with diamonds in gold & platinum, Pforzheim around 1920
Jewelry fashion did not change in one fell swoop from the soft forms of the Belle Époque to the geometric aesthetics of Art Deco when the clock struck midnight on January 1, 1920. In fact, there are many more similarities between the jewellery of the two eras than one might initially think: for example, the love of craftsmanship and refinement, the techniques such as mille handles and platinum overlays on yellow gold, the delicacy of the designs. Thus one slowly developed from the other, and many pieces of jewellery even accompanied their wearers for years from one fashion into the other. The present necklace, for example, is such a piece of jewellery, as it could be bought for several years, as it did not go out of fashion - in fact, we have been able to trace very similar designs in antique jewellery catalogues from our library, including a Pforzheim catalogue from 1914 as well as one from the 1920s. This necklace also bears the mark of a manufacturer from Pforzheim, namely that of the D. F. Weber jewel and ring factory. The Y design is focused on a long, slender pendant with a large gemstone resplendent under a double leaf at the end. Here, it is an old-cut diamond of just under half a carat. Further diamonds set the moving pendulum, which is joined at its top by three further old-cut diamonds to form the simple chain. The design is made of platinum on gold, as is typical of the time, while the original chain is made of silver. The necklace is impeccably preserved. Then as now, it promises to remain timeless for many years to come and to be a companion for further jewels of various fashions.
