Elegant lavalliere necklace with diamonds in gold & platinum, around 1920

Lavalliere necklaces were a popular form of jewelry in the early 20th century. While in the USA this name was used to describe all necklaces with pendants on delicate chains, in Europe and especially Germany it referred to a more specific form of necklace: the one with two suspended pendants of unequal length. Where the name comes from, the history of jewelry is divided: either it comes from the actress Ève Lavallière, who is said to have worn such necklaces with preference, or it derives from the Duchess Louise de La Vallière, who liked to tie men's neckties to bows with unequal length ends. The term "negligé necklace" was also used for the same type of necklace. Here the term alludes to the casual elegance of such an asymmetrical piece of jewelry, as it derives from the French word for "careless". Whatever you call it, the present necklace demonstrates the elegance of such a jewel. Two fine, hinged bars are suspended down from interlocking, diamond-shaped elements. Each of them bears as a showpiece a diamond-studded drop, in the center of which a small flower made of diamonds and platinum seems to float. If movement comes into the jewelry piece through the numerous small joints, it sparkles all the more. With its combination of straight geometry and delicate flower elements, the necklace stands on the threshold between Belle Époque and Art Deco. Its make, in platinum on gold, and the diamond cuts also attest to this dating. It is excellently preserved. It was probably once made in Germany.
