Afternoon of a parrot
First class diamond, sapphire & ruby brooch, circa 1890
The art of foreign countries and continents inspires people not only in our age of globalization. As early as the Baroque period, porcelain from China was collected and its ornaments and patterns were diligently copied. Shortly after 1800, after Napoleon's Egyptian expedition, countless coffeehouses, teahouses and salons were built in the style of the pharaohs. And at the end of the 19th century, the art world looked to Japan: woodcuts, prints and drawings were imported, from which van Gogh, Manet, Degas and also Paul Klee drew inspiration. And again and again, exotic animals were themes in the visual arts and decorative arts. This witty brooch made of silver, gold and precious gemstones has an exotic bird as its theme: it shows a colourful parrot. A blue sapphire from Ceylon forms its eye, fine rubies and shimmering diamonds make its feathers shine in the most beautiful brilliance. Its claws hold a staff tightly clasped. As a toy, one has a large pearl, which he looks at curiously. The workmanship of the brooch is very good and shows off the materials used here wonderfully. For example, the rubies are set in rich gold, which brings out their radiant color, while the diamonds are set in silver to keep them from appearing yellowish. In addition, the brooch is in very good condition. Its previous owners took good care of it and even had the clasp of the pin renewed to ensure a secure fit at all times. With this exceptional piece from around 1890, you too can experience the spirit of exoticism that looked out into the world to embellish life at home with wit and the will to create.
