Venus in the conch shell

First-class vintage coral-gem as brooch in gold around 1980

The treasures of the sea have always fascinated people. The bizarre natural form and intense color of coral has been the object of desire since antiquity and has been crafted into wonderful jewelry throughout the ages. This spectacular coral cameo in a particularly fine, detailed cut shows Venus, the goddess of love. Sculpturally we see her noble head adorned with pearls and a dolphin. Quite appropriately, the head of Venus seems to glide along on a clam. We know similar representations from the field of fine arts. Also in Botticelli's famous painting "The Birth of Venus", for example, the goddess of love is shown with this attribute. For according to tradition, Venus is born from a shell! The special finesse of the depiction of face and hair is immediately captivating: fine curls wind around the beautiful head of the ruler of love. First-class the figure is cut into the unusually beautiful coral piece. A large drop of the same material is attached by the cameo, and a wide framing of high karat gold surrounds the carving. The coral is so-called angel skin coral, which is found especially on the Adriatic side of Italy. The motif and design of this rare piece allow us to date it to around 1980. The piece of jewellery is as first class as it is well preserved and perhaps just the right gift for your own goddess of love?

Gems with mythological motifs were created especially in the 19th century in Italy for travellers on a Grand Tour. This so-called cavalier tour, which was supposed to perfect the education of the travellers, led to the antique buildings, to the art collections of Rome and Naples and the early tourists brought back small souvenirs from their journey across the Alps, which were supposed to tell of the experiences of the Italian journey.
