Seventies for the shirt!

Expressive vintage silver & amethyst cufflinks, probably Denmark, circa 1975

In the 1960s and 70s there was a continuous and experimental search for new possibilities of expression in jewellery design. The aim was to create an independent abstract formal language that would stand out from the preceding historicizing styles - and at the same time be recognizably contemporary and modern. Since then, the materiality of the pieces has often been in the foreground, the contrast, for example, between reflective and matt surfaces and the play of light and shadow. Today, these handcrafted creations are once again appreciated as vintage jewellery, as they convince with their independent design language. This expressive pair of cufflinks made of solid silver is a typical and beautiful example of this period: the handcrafted buttons present as fronts an expressive-organic arrangement of free surface forms, on each of which an amethyst crystal sets a deep violet color accent. The hallmark of the preserved buttons suggests that they were made in Denmark. A wonderful adornment for the shirt - a piece of wearable craftsmanship and a great addition to any collection of vintage jewelry designs.

This ring comes from the goldsmith's shop of Monika and Burkhard Oly. The couple married in 1960 and became artistically independent in Wirtheim in 1963 by setting up a joint goldsmith's and silversmith's workshop and a sculptor's studio. In the following years she won many prizes for her innovative design, such as the Bavarian State Prize in 1963 and the Grand Silver Prize of Mexico in 1971. In the 1970s and 80s, the precious metal stamp designed by Oly with a smile composed of the three letters of the family name became a well-known trademark in jewelry design.
