I Dreamed a Dream

Elegant Art Deco bar brooch with natural pearl & diamonds, Munich circa 1925

For a brief moment it seemed possible, the dream of a happier society without hardship and poverty, in new luxury and beauty. The First World War was over, the economy began to warm up and a new style conquered art, architecture and crafts: Art Deco. For the historical forms of the turn of the century had been discredited with the demise of the old social forms. The new urge for fun-loving wealth demanded new forms, which the new objectivity was not able to fully satisfy. In the return to clear geometries, symmetries and the most luxurious materials, the new formal language of the new era then emerged: dynamic, splendid and modern. This brooch from around 1925 speaks exactly this language. The front of the brooch made of white gold is completely covered with light platinum. A rich setting of small diamond roses and old-cut diamonds totaling about 0.63 carats makes this fine piece of jewelry shine in bright light. The center of the composition occupies a beautiful natural pearl accompanied by delicate shadow gaps. The luxurious setting is presented amidst saw work and the finest millegrains in typical Art Deco shapes, as found in ever-changing variations on countless pieces of jewelry of the period. The result is an exemplary white jewel of the turbulent 1920s; a particularly richly decorated brooch in the best condition and workmanship. The brooch has been preserved in its presumably original case of the royal Bavarian court jeweler G. Merk in Munich and found its way to us here in Berlin.
