Do you know how many stars are in the sky...?

Festive antique garnet star as brooch, Bohemian garnet around 1890

Empress Elisabeth "Sisi" of Austria and Hungary had a weakness for stars: the famous portrait by Franz Xaver Winterhalter shows her with precious diamond stars in her hair, and looking at this beautiful brooch made of Bohemian garnet (a stone from one of the countries she ruled) she might have been tempted too... The antique brooch is designed in the shape of a many-pointed star. The cut dark red pyrope garnets of Bohemian origin are arranged on it in three planes. Numerous stones in the classic rose cut show the skill of the gemstone cutters of Bohemia and the used tombac, a brass alloy typical for the time, takes a back seat to the maximum so that the red sparkling gemstones are in the foreground of the design. Created in the years around 1890 and thus about 130 years old, the star is still a piece of jewellery that draws the eye and pleases pleasantly.

Garnet, as a dark, blood-red and mysterious stone, has always been the object of desire for women of all ages. Garnet jewellery suits almost every occasion and is therefore not only worn in the evening or on festive occasions. Most commonly used are the dark red pyrope garnets. In the Middle Ages they were counted among the preferred carbuncle stones and even today you can see a lot of antique jewellery set with red garnets. These mostly come from sites in Bohemia. Since the garnet as a gemstone is relatively insensitive, once acquired garnet jewelry can be a companion for a lifetime.
