Blossom of Art Nouveau

Floral diamond ring in gold and silver, around 1900

All the designers who worked in the years around 1900 and whom we today call artists of Art Nouveau, Art Nouveau or Style Liberty, had in common that they were looking for fundamentally new forms. Their art and crafts were to be in harmony with the modern world and to correspond to the changed technology, the new society and the new life. Their solutions, however, differed greatly. While in France the School of Nancy led the way and floral motifs were transformed into spectacular new art forms, in Vienna the Wiener Werkstätte emerged with a stricter conception of ornamentation. Thus, almost every European centre found its very own expression of this always exciting style. The present ring with three diamonds in red gold and silver came to us here in Berlin and in its forms corresponds completely to the taste of the turn of the century: From a simple ring rail, a small flower develops with bold sweeps, its blossoms and leaves set with a total of five diamonds. Pleasantly flat, the ring can also be worn every day and is thus a testimony to the heyday of Art Nouveau that still delights the heart today, just as it did more than 120 years ago.
