Floral necklace with natural pearls in gold, Great Britain circa 1900
Pieces of jewellery in yellow gold, set all over with seed pearls, were particularly popular in Great Britain around 1900. Especially popular were the so-called "necklets", delicate necklaces. This is also proven by the illustrated advertisement of the London firm Mappin & Webb from 1900 (see last picture), which states that due to the great demand for pearls the prices for such products had risen. The present necklace uses the pearls to form a series of shimmering flowers. Set between the blossoms are elongated elements with small leaves, each ending in a pearl at the bottom. Thus, the necklace adopts the fashion of sof. Fringe necklaces, which were also a big fashion at the turn of the century. The necklace is made of the typical British alloy of fifteen carat gold (equivalent to a fineness of 625/000). We encounter this alloy in much Victorian and Edwardian jewellery, but it was only used until 1932, after which its use was banned. The necklace is in very good condition. The pearls gleam with a fresh lustre, and the gold also shines warmly as on the first day. We discovered it in London.
